Because of the way Matthew's brain works, he has a very hard time understanding statements that would elude to what is understood, but not said. You need to give it to him straight. He just cannot wrap his mind around things that are not in plain and simple terms. And sometimes we forget this. Sometimes it has gotten us into a little bit of trouble. And sometimes it makes us laugh so hard we want to cry.
I grew up with the same menu item for breakfast 5 days a week every week of the school year. Oatmeal. I didn't mind it. Of course, who could taste the oatmeal when you put several heaps of sugar on top. LOL! It was cheap and filling. And as my school mornings grew crazier with my own little family, we decided to go with the instant oatmeal packs for breakfast. Kudos to whoever invented those time saving little packs.

Matthew normally doesn't complain about eating oatmeal. But on one morning he asks why he has to eat it every day. Dave tells him that oatmeal is Brain Food. And that Matthew's brain needs good food to do well in school. A few days go by...Matthew has been thinking. He comes up to Dave and asks, "Daddy, how does oatmeal get into my brain"? We just about fell off our chairs laughing. Oops! With Matthew you've just got to tell it like it is.
